The cashew apple is the fleshy fruit the nut hangs from, and it is the overwhelming majority of the crop by weight. It is highly perishable, bruises easily and has almost no formal market, so across West Africa it is left to rot where it falls.
Using it is a logistics and processing problem rather than an agricultural one. Solving it adds a second product stream from a harvest we are already paying for — and gives farmers a reason to be paid twice for the same tree.

Why is the cashew apple usually wasted?
It is highly perishable, bruises in transit and begins to ferment within a day or two of picking. Without processing capacity close to the orchard there is no practical way to use it, so it is left in the field.
How much of the crop is the apple?
The overwhelming majority by weight. The nut is a small fraction of what the tree actually produces.
Is this product line available now?
